John W. Murphy (the surname
was originally McMurchy)
was a half brother of Richard White's 2-great grandfather John English
Autry. Both were sons of Barbara Rebecca McMillian.
His father was her first husband, James Murphy. John W. Murphy
was born on 2 July 1812, probably in Cumberland Couny, North Carolina.
John W. Murphy was enrolled on 6 July 1861, at
Americus, Sumter County, Georgia, and served as a private in Companies
A and B of the 11th Georgia Volunteer Artillery Battalion which was
called the Sumter Flying Artillery, and also Cutts Flying
Artillery. John W. Murphy was severely wounded at Dranesville,
Virginia, on 20 December 1861 and was disability discharged on 21
December 1862.
He died on 31 March 1893 and was buried in Salem Methodist Church Cemetery in Sumter County, Georgia.
